Collection of old Pictures

The Society began in 1982 with Leo Doiron as its' first president. The primary goal of the society is to preserve the history of Pomquet through artifacts, pictures, documents and old stories. This preservation will result in educating the present and future generations on the rich history of Pomquet.
A secondary goal of the society is to have as complete as possible the geneology of all the acadian/french families who first settled in Pomquet. This project will always be considered a work in progress. We will hopefully be able to enlarge our museum to properly showcase our history for everyone to see.

This official website on Pomquet will contribute greatly to the goals of what the Society wants to achieve. It will literally put Pomquet on the map worldwide.
The project was made possible through Human Resources Devlopement Canada, which allowed us to employ web developer, Thomas Boudreau of Arichat.
We are very pleased with his work and hope you enjoy the site. Thank You to these people for their efforts as it is much appreciated.

President of the Historical Society

A bit of History

p.jpg (1311 bytes)
omquet was established in 1774 by a group of five Acadian families who arrived from St. Malo, France, via the Jersey Islands and Arichat. The families consisted of Broussard, Doiron (also known as Durant), Duon (also known as DeYoung), and LaMarre and Vincent. Between 1789 and 1792, more Acadian families from St. Malo arrived and included  Boudreau, Landry, Broussard (brother to the first Broussard), Melanson, and Rosia (now Rogers).

Morell also arrived in Pomquet during this time frame, possibly from Quebec.By the 1817, new settlers arrived in Pomquet. The family name DeKrauz (Cross) arrived from near Paris and Philippon came with the Trappist monks. Drouillet and Toupais also settled in the area, but origins are unknown. Wolfe (now DeWolfe) arrived here from the village of Chezzetcook, near Halifax. Venedam and Renyrimbeau arrived after the 1817 census from France. Benoit migrated from Tracadie to Pomquet by 1800 and later followed by
DesLauriers.

NON-ACADIAN FAMILIES

ALTHOUGH POMQUET WAS SETTLED PRIMARILY BY FRENCH SPEAKING FAMILIES, THERE ARE SEVERAL ENGLISH-SPEAKING FAMILIES THAT HAVE SETTLED IN POMQUET, PARTICULARLY IN THE LAST THIRTY YEARS. AT FIRST MANY OF THE ENGLISH WERE MARRIED TO A RESIDENT OF POMQUET. NOW MANY ARE JOINING OUR COMMUNITY FOR VARIOUS OTHER REASONS. THIS ALL ADDS TO A RICH DIVERSITY OF CULTURES IN POMQUET. YOU WILL FIND MANY NAMES SUCH AS MACDONALD, GOSBEE, MACEACHERN, FENNELL, GILES, SMITH, EHLER, YETMAN, CURRY, MACINTOSH, OOSTVOGELS, CHISHOLM, KAVANAUGH, WALSH, MACNEIL, MURRAY, DOYLE AND SNYDER.
