Churches of Pomquet

Church of PomquetBy 1803, a chapel had been built near the shore of the harbour across from the house of Leo & Rita Durant. The name given was 'la Chapelle de l'Exultation de la Sainte Croix'. The cemetary is also situated at the site but there no longer any gravemarkers. . The parish registry registry which dates from Jan. 18th 1820, includes entrys which were made by Rev. François-Xavier, the university's namesake in Antigonish.

Inside old churchThe registry states that around 1803, a church was built near the shore behind  Bob Kopf's house, which is also the area  where an old cemetery is located in which  the people who died from smallpox are buried. The present day church was built by Father Martel who also built Tracadie and Harve- Boucher's churches. In 1861, Arichat's priest, in a letter addressed to Father Rameau, states that the Population at that time was 600 people. In the years that followed, Saint-Croix church has know several changes and undergone many repairs to become the beautiful church we now attend.
